Vocabulary workshop quiz over unit 5 words 11 - 20 will be on February 9, 2018. February break is February 19 - 23. In language arts this week, we will be reading 2 articles "Don't Ban Peanuts at school, but Teach about the Dangers" and "Penny Problem: Not Worth the Metal It's Made Of". Students will be identifying the claim, or thesis statement, and the support for, or against, the claim. Students will also be practicing paraphrasing, stating a claim and providing support for their claim. For homework this week, students will be working on writing their own opinion paragraph for the prompt "Which fast food restaurant do you think should be allowed to provide meals on Wednesdays at Pine Mountain Middle School." Monday - brainstorm which restaurant would you nominate and the reasons to support your claim Tuesday - write a rough draft Wednesday - use the paragraph review to edit your rough draft Thursday - Write your final copy. It will be due when you come to class.

Book Report #5 was due January 16th. If you have not turned it in, please turn it in.
Vocabulary Workshop Unit 5 test on words #1-10 will be this Friday. Please study nightly. In language arts this week, we will be starting Unit 3 in our Springboard Workbooks. We will be learning new vocabulary, paraphrasing, and identifying claims in arguments. We will be reviewing Common Core Literature standards for our warm ups this week. For homework this week, students will be writing an opinion paragraph on the prompt "People should be taxed to care for abused animals." Monday - List as many pros and cons on the graphic organizer that you can think of (minimum of 2 for each) Tuesday - Choose your side and highlight your 2 reasons to support your claim and 1 counterclaim. Wednesday - Write your first draft of your paragraph. Thursday - Write the final copy of your paragraph. Welcome Back!
I hope everyone had a wonderful break. This week in language arts, we will be finishing up our personal narratives. Students will be editing their work for capitalization, punctuation, subject-verb agreement and to be sure that it makes sense. Next week, students will be taking the SRI and the SMI on Monday. We will be taking a pretest over our next unit and will begin reading and working on opinion and persuasion articles. The next book report will be due on January 15, 2017. We start back up with vocabulary next week. |
