Important dates:
Early Release - Wednesday, August 30th Vocabulary Quiz on words 11 - 20 - September 8th 1st book report due September 15th. In language arts this week, we will continue working on Unit 1 in the Vocabulary Workshop words 11 - 15 (immense, inept, ingenious, instantaneous, irk). We will take our test over words 11 - 20 next Friday, September 8. We will also continue reading the story "The Circuit" in our Springboard workbooks. We will be studying academic and literary vocabulary and internal and external conflicts. We will be finishing our unit on pronouns this week and will begin working on nouns. Homework: Monday - Relative Pronouns and finish working your Lincs table for instantaneous and irk, Tuesday - Interrogative Pronouns, Wednesday - No homework, Thursday - Possessive nouns. Students are continuing to read their fiction books in their 3rd period classes and keeping a journal or reading log about what they are reading. They will use these to complete their first book report that will be due September 15th. We will work on their first book report in class.

On Monday, we have the solar eclipse. Students who have permission will be able to safely to view the eclipse thanks to our science teacher and PTSA. They purchased certified glasses for student and faculty use. Students without permission will view eclipse in the theatre. Open House will be on Thursday from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Parents come and meet your student's teachers! We look forward to seeing everyone there. Next Wednesday, August 30th, will be our first early release. Students will be dismissed 2 hours early. In language arts this week, students will be working on improving their vocabulary using the Kansas University LINCs strategy. Students will be taking their quiz on words #1-10 on Friday. Please study! Remember to review your words every night. We will also begin working on our first unit in the Springboard textbooks. We will be analyzing our 1st embedded assessment to determine what we need to learn in order to be successful. We will also be reading the short story "The Circuit." We will rate our vocabulary knowledge using the QHT strategy. Homework this week: Monday - Finish Intensive pronoun worksheet and "Write On." Tuesday - Finish your reflexive pronoun worksheet. I hope everyone had a restful weekend. Don't forget that we will have our Color Battle on Friday! If you are participating, remember to wear comfortable clothes that you are not afraid to get dirty. Parents, the solar eclipse will occur on Monday, September 21. We will have an extended day so student will have the opportunity to watch it. If you would like your student to observe it outside (with certified glasses), then please sign and return the permission slip. If you do not return the signed permission slip, they will stay inside and watch it on the TV. Book Report #1 is a fictional book report and will be due September 15. You should be reading it during your Reach class and filling in your reading log. In language arts this week, we will starting working in the vocabulary workbooks. This week, we will be focusing on 10 words - apparel - clothing besiege - to attack compress - to shrink denounce - to criticize dispatch - to send away douse - soak expressly - pointedly famished - starving forsake- leave gainful - moneymaking or profitable You will have your quiz on these words next Friday. This week, we will be seeing a presentation on using the I-responds, taking our ELA unit 1 pretest, and previewing the unit. Homework this week: Monday - Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns - finish and complete Write On! Tuesday - Pronoun agreement with the antecedent Wednesday and Thursday - Indefinite pronouns This week in language arts, we will be going to the computer lab to take our beginning of the year Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) testing. This will provide us a current reading Lexile level. Students will be working on NewsELA assignments. Students will also be going to the media center for orientation. While in the media center for book checkout. This week, students will be writing their friendly letters to me. We will be introducing the 12 book report options. This week, we will be focusing on pronouns during our warm ups.
Homework this week: Monday - Write 2 sentences - 1 with a noun and another sentence with a pronoun that refers back to the noun in the prior sentence. Tuesday - Finish subject pronoun worksheet #2. We are glad that you are here! In language arts this week, we have been working on getting to know each other, our expectations for ourselves, our classmates and from Mrs. Ogle. We will also have a classroom scavenger hunt locating where to find things in our classes, writing personal letters to our teacher, and completing a facebook writing assignment. The syllabus and ELA newsletter will be going home this week. Homework this week: Monday: None Tuesday: Write 2 sentence with action verbs. Underline the action verbs 2 times. Wednesday: Write 3 sentences with proper nouns relating to life outside of school. Thursday: Write 2 sentences using adjectives to describe yourself. Friday: No homework. Enjoy your weekend. In reading this week, we are learning about ourselves, writing ourselves into books, and writing letters to our future selves. We will begin learning a test taking strategy. We are reading silently everyday for 25 minutes in class. We are working on writing summaries about what we read. The syllabus will be sent home this week. Homework this week: Monday: None Tuesday: List 3 things that your read at home. Wednesday: Continue working on writing yourself into a book.
